Herbal formulation research in a wellness laboratory

How to Choose Quality Herbal Products: What to Check on the Label

Herbal and natural products are popular, but quality can vary widely. The label is your first and best tool for judging a product before you buy it.

1. Manufacturer and licence details

A genuine product clearly shows the manufacturer’s name, address and licence number. For Ayurvedic products, this is an AYUSH-related manufacturing licence; for supplements, an FSSAI licence number.

2. Clear ingredient list

Look for the botanical or common names of herbs and the quantity of each ingredient per tablet, capsule or serving. Vague terms like “herbal blend” without quantities give you less information.

3. Batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates

These help with traceability and tell you the product is within its shelf life.

4. Dosage and directions

Good labels clearly explain how much to take, when and how. Follow these directions and do not exceed the recommended dose.

5. Realistic claims

Be careful with products that promise instant results or claim to cure serious diseases. Responsible brands make claims that are allowed for their product category.

6. Storage instructions and warnings

Storage conditions, allergy information and warnings for specific groups show the brand has thought about safety.
